Language Programs

Build linguistic proficiency in Khmer, French or Mandarin

We believe that language is central to all learning, and that all teachers are language teachers who strive to promote and foster ways to communicate. We recognize the importance of home languages (mother tongue) in the learning process. The aim is for all students to achieve the benefits of multilingualism which values all languages and cultures and affirms the identity of each learner.

Our language programs helps foster the IB Learner Profile attribute of being communicators. Students are encouraged to express themselves confidently and creatively in more than one language, developing the ability to collaborate effectively. Through exposure to diverse languages and cultures, students learn to appreciate different perspectives and approaches. This openness prepares them to be inquirers who seek out and evaluate a range of information sources.

Language classes in Khmer, French or Mandarin

Students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 12 take several language classes per week in their choice of Khmer, Mandarin or French.

Students taking Khmer language classes may enrol in our 3-year, credit-earning Khmer Language and Culture Course. The course is accredited by the Ministry of Education in province of Alberta, Canada. It promotes a depth of understanding of Khmer language, culture and history through a structured curriculum. Students can earn up to 15 credits toward an Alberta High School Diploma and continue their study of Khmer language and culture at the university level.

Mandarin and French Bilingual Programs

Students in Senior Kindergarten and above may enrol in either the French Bilingual Program or the Mandarin Bilingual Program at the beginning of the school year. Students in the Bilingual Programs study the Alberta (Canadian) curriculum in either Mandarin or French. They acquire the basic skills for speaking, reading, writing, listening and communicating in French or Mandarin.

Proficiency in English and either French and Mandarin is strongly recommended for students entering the program. It is important that parents of students in a Biligual Program will be able to support their children's language learning reading books (of any language) with their children at home. The French and Mandarin Bilingual Programs are complimentary. Students enrol at no extra cost.
