Designing solutions to complex challenges
Students develop the technical skills and creative mindset needed to solve real-world problems through our Design and Innovation Program.
Teachers specializing in design and innovation create authentic, hands-on learning experiences for students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 12. These experiences integrate with and enhance the curriculum.
Students use an iterative design cycle to break down complex problems and to innovate solutions step by step. In our makerspaces, students use tools, materials and cutting-edge, emerging technologies to bring their ideas to life. They build skills in programming, computer-aided design, 3D modeling, printing and robotics. Elementary students, for example, designed robots that can survive in extreme weather conditions. They used new tools, learned about climate change, and practiced new vocabulary. This design and innovation project integrated with their language arts classes.
Members of our after-school Robotics Club also use our makerspaces to build their machines. They are guided by our specialist design and innovation teaching team. We are very proud of the club's national championship win at the 2025 Robot Rumble. CIS won first place out of 33 competing teams from schools and universities across Cambodia.
Our Design and Innovation Program aligns with standards set by the International Society for Technology in Education, as well as with Alberta Education’s Information and Communication Technology Program, Career and Technology Foundation Program, and Career and Technology Studies Program.
