Experience Week and Field Trips

Explore new places and embrace new experiences

Students benefit from immersive and hands-on learning experiences outside of their usual learning environment. Experience Week, Discovery Week and field trips offer adventure and support the application of knowledge in real-world contexts.

Experience Week, held annually, enables students in Grades 6-10 to travel to locations in Cambodia with their peers. Students have visited salt flats in Kampot, waterfalls in Siem Riep and the forests of Mondulkiri. Students in Grade 11 travel to an international location. In 2024, our students explored the rainforests of Borneo.

Discovery Week is for students in Senior Kindergarten to Grade 5. They participate in local projects outside of their normal schedule and enjoy a series of daily challenges, team-building activities and field trips. Discovery Week concludes with an optional sleepover at school.

Classroom teachers plan field trips to extend the curriculum and foster curiosity. All students in Elementary School, Middle School and High School participate in regular field trips linked to their classroom studies. An outing to a hydroponic farm in 2023, for example, reinforced an inquiry regarding plant growth rates and graphing. A Phnom Penh architecture tour in 2024 added context to an inquiry into Cambodian vernacular architecture. Students visited a rock climbing center during Physical Education and Wellness classes to explore rock climbing as a new form of exercise and team building. Field trips are a meaningful part of the day-to-day student experience at CIS.

Students in Grade 12 enjoy an annual class trip to commemorate their final year at CIS.

Experience Week, Discovery Week, all field trips and the Grade 12 commemorative class trip are complimentary offerings.
